Picnic Rug or Cosy Blanket?

A picnic rug needs to sit on grass, sand or uneven ground, while a throw or fleece blanket is primarily about warmth and softness. Some products cross between both jobs, but the backing, padding and finish still matter. Decide whether the item will go under people, over people or live in the car waiting for either.

Backings, Fabrics and Fill

• Fleece-top picnic rugs: feel soft on top and may use PEVA, polyester or another water-resistant backing underneath.
• Woven picnic blankets: offer a more premium texture, with padded and lined constructions on selected products.
• Puffer blankets: combine lightweight outer fabric with fill for warmth and pack into a pouch on selected styles.

Water Resistance Has Limits

A water-resistant backing can help with damp grass, and selected products use a waterproof-backing description. That does not make the whole blanket stormproof or suitable for sitting in a puddle like a contestant in a very low-budget survival show. Seams, edges, top fabric and prolonged exposure can still let moisture through.

Shake off dirt, allow damp rugs to dry fully and follow the product's care instructions before storing. Sand, grass and forgotten crumbs have an impressive ability to turn a neat folded blanket into its own tiny ecosystem.

Packed Size and Carrying Style

Many picnic rugs fold into themselves and close with hook-and-loop tabs, straps or a handle. Others use a separate pouch. Check the open dimensions for group size and the packed dimensions for storage. A large family rug is useful at the park but less charming when it occupies half the boot beside the chairs and esky.

Embroidery, Transfer and Full-Colour Print

Embroidery gives selected fleece, fabric flaps or carry panels a textured logo. Transfer methods handle more detail on compatible panels, while selected custom blankets support broad full-colour artwork. Branding may sit on the blanket corner, closure flap, strap or carry bag, so confirm what remains visible when the product is both folded and open.
